Adding to Winners
“Most people take a full position and scale out. We do the opposite: start small and add to winners.” The full position is built during the move as evidence accumulates, not taken in full at the first signal and trimmed on the way up.
The sequence
Open: on a reversal, a small starter position at an actionable signal‘s trigger, with the signal’s normal stop. Add: on each continuation in the same direction, e.g., a momo hammer fires, an inside bar forms, and the break of its high is the add. With experience, an open on a continuation is also possible.
The combined-stop rule
Rule: if full size is not stopped out and another setup forms with a new stop that still keeps the entire trade at profit, add. Each add is its own trade with its own stop at the new setup’s level; the test is whether that stop, applied to the combined position, leaves the whole trade green. If an add stops out, cut only the add and keep the core. Stops only move closer to price, never away (see stop losses).
Limits
There is no limit on the number of adds: add on every new signal that passes the combined-stop rule, until price reaches the target. Add before the end of the open you are trading on, because later in that bar you approach exhaustion of the continuity level and of the signals tied to it. As price approaches magnitude, exhaustion risk dominates. At magnitude you defend, not add: reduce, move the stop to break-even, or exit. The completed move is exhaustion risk by price. Stop adding unless a higher-timeframe signal is going in-force; the stacked adds mean your largest position rode the move to magnitude, which is exactly when you lock it in. As the position builds, stops trail up on the lows; each add requires a new actionable signal in the same direction and is sized as its own trade (see position sizing).
