The Intraday Index Simultaneous Break

Definition Intraday index simultaneous break: one or more of the major indexes (SPY, QQQ, IWM, DIA) close the same 60-minute bar inside. The inside bar’s high and low are the triggers. The next hour breaks it, or fails the break and reverses. This is the intraday version of the simultaneous break.

Timeframe

  • 60-minute: the learning ground. Learn the setup here first.
  • Lower timeframes: when the VIX is higher.
  • Higher timeframes: for swing trading. The same pattern prints on the daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly.

The scan

60s run open-to-open (9:30, 10:30, and on), so each hour closes at xx:30, the bottom of the hour. 5 to 10 minutes before the close, check SPY, QQQ, IWM and DIA. One or more closing inside is the setup.

Example: the break holds for two days

SPY and QQQ, June 29-30 2026, 60-minute bars on one clock: both close the same mid-morning hour inside, both break up, and the move continues into Tuesday. SPY and QQQ: one inside hour, two days of follow-through — June 29–30 2026 $SPY 1 2u morning high — the previous range Mon Jun 29 — the fresh weekly open Tue Jun 30 $QQQ 1 2u morning high — the previous range Mon Jun 29 — the fresh weekly open Tue Jun 30 Monday, fresh weekly open: price discovery SPY and QQQ close the same hour inside: equilibrium Next hour: both break up, 2u Both take the morning high and hold it into the close Tuesday: the move continues real data · 60-minute bars, both panels on the same clock, own price scale · blue box = the simultaneous inside 60TheStrat.AI
June 29 to 30 2026, real data. Monday, first session of the week: SPY and QQQ close the same mid-morning hour inside. The next hour breaks up on both. Both take the morning high and hold it into the close. Tuesday continues up.

Better or worse

  • Better: the break goes back through a previous range, the highs or lows on the left of the chart, where the stops and pivots are.
  • Better: timeframe continuity is in the direction of the break.
  • Better: near a higher-timeframe open, the first sessions of a week, month, quarter or year. The break sets the direction for that period.
  • Worse: the higher timeframe is an inside bar or doji, a motherbar problem. The break can stop within hours.

The break fails: simultaneous 1-2-2

All indexes break the inside bar to one side, fail, and reverse through the other side together: the simultaneous 1-2-2.

The simultaneous 1-2-2 rev-strat, February 26 2026: SPY, QQQ, IWM and DIA all print an inside 60-minute bar on the third hour, all break it down, the break fails on every index, and all four reverse back up through the inside bar high at once — the whole market runs the same rev-strat simultaneously. Real hourly data. The break FAILS — the simultaneous 1-2-2 rev-strat: February 26 2026 $SPY 1 2d fails 2u 1-2-2 trigger 9:30 16:00 $QQQ 1 2d fails 2u 1-2-2 trigger 9:30 16:00 $IWM 1 2d fails 2u 1-2-2 trigger 9:30 16:00 $DIA 1 2d fails 2u 1-2-2 trigger 9:30 16:00 the failed break IS the setup: the 1 broke down, could not travel, and the reclaim of the 1’s high is the 1-2-2 — on every index at once real data, February 26 2026 · each panel on its own scale · blue box = the simultaneous inside 60 · green dashes = the rev-strat triggerTheStrat.AI

Not all four break: wait, watch for the 1-3

If the indexes do not all break at the same time, do not take the first break. Wait for one of two things:

  • The others break the same way: that is the simultaneous break.
  • The break reclaims right away and does not re-break: a chance of a 1-3, the 1-bar rev-strat. A 2d trading green (or a 2u trading red) is a 2 going 3. It becomes a 3 if it takes the other side of the inside bar: every 3 was a 2 first. Past 50% of the inside bar, a potential 3 is forming.

This tends to happen when all indexes are inside on the 60, but only 1 or 2 of them break.

October 15 2026, 60-minute bars: SPY, QQQ, IWM and DIA all close the 11:30 hour inside. At 12:30 only QQQ breaks the inside low, reclaims it right away and closes green (1-2d green); SPY, IWM and DIA stay inside. At 13:30 all four break up together. Real hourly data. Only QQQ breaks, and it reclaims — wait for the others: October 15 2026 $SPY 1 1 no break 2u 9:30 16:00 $QQQ 1 2d reclaims 2u 9:30 16:00 $IWM 1 1 no break 2u 9:30 16:00 $DIA 1 1 no break 2u 9:30 16:00 one index breaks and reclaims, three stay inside: no simultaneous break yet — the next hour all four break up real data, October 15 2026 · each panel on its own scale · blue box = the simultaneous inside 60 · blue dashes = the 1’s high: the QQQ 2d goes 3 if it takes itTheStrat.AI

The break holds: simultaneous continuation

Simultaneous continuation, January 21 2026: SPY, QQQ, IWM and DIA all print an inside 60-minute bar on the fourth hour, all break it up, take the morning highs on the left of the chart, and hold the break into the close on every index — continuation across the whole market with full timeframe continuity behind it.
