# The Flip: The New 60-Minute Open

By [Alex Sopa (AlexsOptions)](https://thestrat.ai/docs/alex-sopa/) · Updated October 21, 2026

**Definition** **The flip** is the new 60-minute open. The 60 is the only major timeframe (M, W, D, 60) that opens and closes within the same day, so every new 60-minute open is a fresh measurement, like a new day. Each flip either confirms who has control or hands it to the other side.

The month opens once a month, the week once a week, the day once a day. The 60 re-opens every hour of the session. It is the only major timeframe whose [opening price](https://thestrat.ai/docs/opening-price/) resets while you trade, the fastest confirm-or-negate available.

## The flip resolving an override

Say the month and week are green and the day and 60 red: sellers have [immediate control](https://thestrat.ai/docs/override/). Then a flip comes. If the new 60 opens and trades green, the daily seller can no longer be identified: the group that had immediate control has stopped pressing. If the following 60s keep confirming and the last sale crosses back above the daily open, the 60 has negated the day: [FTFC](https://thestrat.ai/docs/full-timeframe-continuity/) up.

[Figure: MU, June 2 2026: real data, hour by hour, each panel on its own scale. The day gaps open at $1,049.69 and trades red against a green month and week (June’s first week: the week and month still share their open). The flips print through the session; when the 60s turn green the daily seller can no longer be identified, and by early afternoon the last sale crosses back above the daily open: the 60 negated the day, FTFC up.]

## What each flip can do

**Confirm:** the new 60 opens and trades in the same direction as the day: the group in control keeps it.

**[Negate](https://thestrat.ai/docs/confirming-negating/):** the new 60 opens against the day. The most immediate participation group has changed sides, and if the last sale crosses the daily open, the day itself is negated, a state change on the whole board.

This is why you watch an [override](https://thestrat.ai/docs/override/) hour by hour: control is only as durable as the next flip. A new 60-minute signal can also form and trigger on the flip, confirming or negating the signals already in force: see [actionable signals + FTFC](https://thestrat.ai/docs/signals-and-ftfc/#the-flip).

## The flip is the bottom of the hour

On stocks and futures the 60-minute bar runs open-to-open (9:30 to 10:30, 10:30 to 11:30), so every flip lands at xx:30, the bottom of the hour. Algorithms have to be told when to buy and sell, and the market’s schedule is anchored to the bottom of the hour: the market open at 9:30, the London close at 11:30, oil inventory numbers at 10:30, and most of the other numbers that matter. You can chart a top-of-the-hour 60, but for stocks and futures, “the flip” almost always means xx:30.

So if a desk tells its [algorithm](https://thestrat.ai/docs/execution-algorithms/) “sell XYZ in the second hour of the day,” that selling shows up on the second 60-minute bar, starting exactly on the flip. Scheduled orders print on scheduled opens, which is why fresh 60-minute opens so often move immediately: the clock told a crowd of programs to start at the same second. It is also when [uncoupling](https://thestrat.ai/docs/uncoupling/) happens: the timeframes separate on their opens, and the 60’s opens land at the bottom of every hour.
