# A Simultaneous Break Removes Diversification: Every Holder Loses at Once

By [Alex Sopa (AlexsOptions)](https://thestrat.ai/docs/alex-sopa/) · Updated October 26, 2026

**Definition** Diversification protects a basket only when its holdings move apart. In a [simultaneous break](https://thestrat.ai/docs/simultaneous-breaks/) the holdings break the same way at the same time. Every holder of the basket is in a losing position at the same moment.

[Figure: WGMI, September 21 to October 23 2026, real data (Alpaca SIP), daily bars. The lamps are 10 miner stocks on the same days: red when the week in progress has traded under the prior week’s low.]

## WGMI and its miners broke as one group

WGMI is an ETF of bitcoin-miner stocks. The week of 21 September 2026 is a 2u red in WGMI and in all 10 miner stocks in the figure. That week’s low in WGMI is 47.74.

On Monday 28 September WGMI opens at 47.60, under 47.74: the weekly [2u-2d](https://thestrat.ai/docs/2-2-reversal/) is in force from the first print. Five of the 10 stocks break their own prior-week low in the first five minutes. RIOT follows at 9:50, WULF and BTDR at 10:35, CLSK at 10:50, MARA at 15:35. By the close, WGMI and all 10 miners are under last week’s low.

Who is losing: every buyer of the 21 September week, in every name. Price is now under that whole week’s range. Holding 10 miners instead of one gave no protection. Four 2d weeks follow. On 23 October WGMI falls to a low of 28.92, 40% under the 25 September close of 48.22.

[Figure: SPY, August 1 to 6 2024, real data (Alpaca SIP), built from the 30-minute stream. The lamps are the 11 sector ETFs on the same clock: red when the day in progress has traded under the prior day’s low, green when it took the prior day’s high.]

## On a crash day, all 11 sectors broke together

On 2 August 2024, 8 of the 11 sector ETFs trade under the prior day’s low. XLP, XLU and XLRE hold. On 5 August all 11 are under it, and 9 of them open under it. The sectors that held on Friday break on Monday too. Every sector holder who bought on 2 August is losing at the same time. On 6 August most sectors take the prior day’s high: a 2d-2u.

This is not new. In large falls, holdings that usually move apart move together. T. Rowe Price found that the correlation of the S&P 500 with world stocks outside the US rose to 93% in falls of more than two standard deviations ([2020](https://www.troweprice.com/content/dam/ide/articles/pdfs/2020/q3/when-diversification-fails.pdf)). On 24 August 2015 there were 1,278 trading halts in 327 exchange-traded products, and an ETF’s correlation with the S&P 500 was a strong predictor of a pause ([SEC staff, December 2015](https://www.sec.gov/marketstructure/research/equity_market_volatility.pdf); [SEC DERA, February 2016](https://www.sec.gov/about/divisions-offices/division-economic-risk-analysis/staff-papers-analyses/feb2016-dera-white-paper-etf-volatility)). Our bar data (Alpaca SIP) starts in January 2016, so that day has no figure here.

## Three checks show who is losing

- **Count the group.** How many names break the same way at the same time? The strongest breaks have 80% or more of the holdings in the same direction (see [simultaneous breaks](https://thestrat.ai/docs/simultaneous-breaks/)).
- **Find the level:** the broken low (or high) of the prior bar. Buyers above it are losing when price is under it.
- **Know who cannot leave.** An index fund or ETF must hold its basket. It cannot diversify away from its own holdings.

The setup and the trade rules are on [simultaneous breaks](https://thestrat.ai/docs/simultaneous-breaks/), and for the indexes on [intraday index simultaneous break](https://thestrat.ai/docs/intraday-index-simultaneous-break/).
