# Be a One-Trick Pony

By [Alex Sopa (AlexsOptions)](https://thestrat.ai/docs/alex-sopa/) · Updated September 23, 2026

**Definition** Shrink the game until it works: one setup, the 30/60 timeframes, one universe (the gappers). Master one thing, then branch out.

Rob’s standing instruction to the overwhelmed trader: “For newer folks, don’t think you got to know every aspect and every setup of the strat. I’ll say this all the time: BE A ONE TRICK PONY. ‘This is all I do, 2-2 60 reversals, that’s it.'”

## One setup

**Rule:** pick one setup (the [2-2 reversal](https://thestrat.ai/docs/2-2-reversal/) on the 60 is Rob’s own example) and trade only that until it works. “I want you to see the same thing over and over and over again. I think it was Bruce Lee who said ‘I’d rather fight a guy that knows a thousand moves than a guy that’s trained the same move a thousand times.’ You should be the master of one thing and be unstoppable.”

“Everybody wants to be a hero… PICK A POSITION, DUDE.” One [reversal type](https://thestrat.ai/docs/types-of-reversals/), mastered, beats the whole playbook half-learned. “You’re trying to do too much… You don’t have to do that. Don’t do it.”

## Slow down

**Rule:** “Especially starting out, SLOW IT DOWN. Don’t be in a hurry to lose money. 30s and 60s will provide more than enough.”

Stay off the 1, 3 and 5 minute charts. “Don’t start jumping in there on ones and threes and fives. You don’t have to do that at all. You can stay on the gaps and stay in the 15s, 30s, 60s all day long and you’ll be fine, because that only gives you three time frames to focus on.” On the smaller timeframes Rob’s answer was “Not until you’re a ninja.” Each new 60-minute open ([the flip](https://thestrat.ai/docs/the-flip/)) is already a fresh read on who has control, which is all the speed you need.

It still works around a day job. “Jump on those 30 or 60 reversals… create the winning position, get your stop in, set it and forget it… it only takes a few good ones.”

## One universe

**Rule:** stay on the [30/60 gapper](https://thestrat.ai/docs/30-60-gapper/) list: that is your [universe](https://thestrat.ai/docs/universes/). “How do you make money consistently? Trade the strat 30/60 gapper list. One can make a very good living doing nothing but that.”

“Trade the same CONDITION, not the same stock, over and over again.” Three to five names at a time is right: “you want to know what you’re up against.” Chasing calls is not a universe: “If you chase Rob’s callouts you will not succeed… staying in your lane.”

“Once you create some winning positions, then you can start [branching]. We like to be playing with their money.”

## Don’t grab every inside bar

**Warning:** “One of the biggest mistakes people make is they start grabbing every inside bar. You can get murdered if you do that.” An [inside bar](https://thestrat.ai/docs/inside-bar/) is not a setup by itself, and a range you are trapped inside is a [motherbar problem](https://thestrat.ai/docs/motherbar-problems/). On tight triangles Rob was blunt: “How do we avoid getting chopped in tight triangles? Don’t trade them.”
